Level up your Chinese

What is Hanzi Hero?
Hanzi Hero is a platform for improving your Chinese*. It focuses on character (hanzi) recognition, vocabulary expansion, and phoneme discrimination because these are the building blocks of fluent communication in Chinese. For more information on the psycholinguistic and cognitive theories behind our learning philosophy, see our white paper here. In brief, it is essential to drill the basic units to the point of automation in order to reduce the free attentional resources for higher-order cognitive tasks, such as planning what to say or reading passages of text.
Vocabulary Breadth
Unlike other apps which aim to teach just a few hundred "common" words or boast of a vocabulary in the 2-3,000 range, we really want to offer a broad vocabulary that will challenge even advanced learners of Chinese. We are talking about over 7,000 characters and 20,000 words. However, instead of just copying everything from a dictionary, we painstakingly consult multiple dictionaries to identify only the most salient or useful definitions of a word and the semantic space encompassed by a character.
Dynamic Testing
Do you get bored of learning platforms that force you to repeat the same lessons composed of the same set of words over and over again? We do too! That's why we designed our smart test generator to dynamically create new lessons (or quizlets or levels or whatever you want to call them) on the fly so that your brain can learn the associations that really matter.
Progressive Difficulty
Hanzi Hero is not just some flashcard system. We use corpus linguistics to sort words into different levels of utility and difficulty and have sophisticated algorithms to construct increasingly difficult tests for individual items.
Cross-lingual Training
Worried that studying Chinese will erase your L2? Why not brush up on your second and third languages at the same time with multilingual support. You can study Chinese through English, Spanish, or German. Similarly, we use Chinese/English as reference languages for a set of Korean vocabulary.
